In an increasingly competitive workplace, NSBE helps to position its technical professional members for success through certification workshops, professional development conferences, cyber-mentoring and many other vital programs.
List of Programs:
NSBE National Convention – The NSBE National Convention provides members an opportunity to meet with almost 10,000 other African-American engineers and students from across the nation. The National Convention is highlighted by the Golden Torch Awards and a large career fair, sponsored by over 200 major companies. The Golden Torch Awards is a gala event hosted by NSBE to recognize the accomplishments of talented engineers in industry, government, and academia. The Golden Torch Awards also recognize the academic accomplishments of high school and college students. Finally, The National Convention provides a variety of professional, technical, and personal development workshops.
NSBE Professional Development Conference / Fall Regional Conference – Every year, our members participate in the Region I Professional Development Conference (PDC). This provides them with an opportunity to network with other African-American Engineers from the Northeastern states and Canada and attend a variety of Professional, Technical, and Personal Development workshops. In addition, we regularly provide support to the Fall Regional Conference as competition judges, conference volunteers, and workshop facilitators for the student events.
Professional Development Seminars – Throughout the year, we host several Personal & Professional Development Seminars. Each seminar focuses on either a specific discipline of engineering or an area of personal development. Some of the seminar topics listed for this year are Financial Planning, Project Management, and Community Development. Most of these session occur during our monthly chapter meetings or local NSBE conferences.
Collegiate Initiative – Members of our Student Outreach Committee act as mentors to undergraduate students at New England area colleges that have NSBE student chapters. The Student Outreach Committee members participate in career panel discussions, judge engineering contests, and provide a presence at the schools to be positive role models for these future Black professionals. This student outreach also applies to pre-college students as well.
NSBE Junior / Pre-College Initiative – The Pre-College Initiative program was designed to increase the level of consciousness of African-American youth, encourage their attendance of college, and their pursuit of both studies and careers in Engineering, Science, and Mathematics. Our goal is to become an important force in the development of our future Engineers. We aim to support the NSBE Jr members with their National Engineers Week Career Panel, college planning, etc.
Summer Sizzler – Every late-summer/early-fall, we hold a large outdoor cookout and activity day for members and their families to enjoy a day of fun, food, and games. Usually, our Summer Sizzler is held at Arsenal Park in Watertown, MA.
Social Activities – In addition to the many professional and community service opportunities, we plan several events with entertainment and physical fitness in mind. Recent events have included a monthly happy hour, bowling, basketball tournaments, fantasy football leagues, flag football, paintball, and karaoke night.
Awards Dinner – Members are recognized at the Awards Banquet for their many accomplishments and contributions throughout the year. Additionally, we invite all of our previous speakers to recognize all of them collectively and honor the winner of our best chapter meeting presentation.
